Hit Broadway Play Opens at the Waterfront
Raging egos, catty comments and buckets of booze…No, it’s not another night on Duval Street. It’s all part of the delicious shenanigans in Terrence McNally’s Broadway hit comedy, “It’s Only A Play,” which just opened at the Waterfront Playhouse. The play is “wickedly funny. A pure hoot,” according to the Associated Press.
“It’s Only A Play” is about the opening night of a new play on the Great White Way. All the leading players have gathered at the opening night party and are nervously awaiting the reviews for the new play. Will it be a hit or a turkey? It’s all in the critics hands in the high stakes world of Broadway theater. The stress isn’t pretty as these oversize personalities (AKA ‘theater people’) have multiple meltdowns. However, it is very funny. The New York Times raved “These are among the funniest lines to roll off a stage in years.”
Murphy Davis directs a cast of top notch comedic talent: David Black, Trey Gerrald, Maribeth Graham, Matt Hollis Hulsey, J. B. McLendon, Marjorie Paul-Shook and Barry Tarallo.
Scenic designer Michael Boyer created the elegant New York penthouse set. The cast looks smashing in black tie and gowns, thanks to costume design by Carmen Rodriguez. John Jaworski is the lighting designer, Ben Pegg on sound and Trish Manley acts as stage manager.
