“Hemingway’s Cuba” Cultural Expedition with Hemingway Expert presented by Key West Art & Historical Society: Deadline Looming

December 6, 2016 — (Key West, FL).  For the Hemingway fan, Cuba is about as synonymous to the man as limes were to his rum.  From February 18 – February 23, 2017, there’s a chance to explore both in “Hemingway’s Cuba”—a six-day People-to-People Cuba expedition presented by Key West Art & Historical Society and led by acclaimed Hemingway scholar Nancy Sindelar, PhD.

Hemingway lived more than two decades of his legendary life on the island a mere 90 miles from Key West, where he wrote some of his most famous work.  The expedition offers participants the opportunity to discover “the places that were influential to him and a chance to learn about the people and activities that shaped his literature and life,” says Adele Williams, KWAHS Director of Education.

The itinerary features tours of Finca Vigia (Hemingway’s Cuban home), Morro Castle, and the Rum Museum, excursions through Hemingway’s haunts in Cojimar (home of Pilar and the setting of Old Man and the Sea), Old Havana, Mirimar, and daily photo lectures by Sindelar highlighting the people, places, and activities that shaped the acclaimed fishing and literary legend.

Sindelar, author of “Influencing Hemingway: The People and Places That Shaped His Life and Work, has “stood in the bedroom where Hemingway was born and the foyer where he ended his life and has visited all the places in between,” she says. She is a native of Hemingway’s hometown of Oak Park, Illinois, and is dedicated to the study of his life, serving as a board member of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, leading walking tours that feature the homes and favorite sites of young Hemingway, and teaching “Hemingway: The Man, The Writer, The Legend” at the University of California.

The expedition launches daily from Hotel Telegrafo in Havana and also includes a cabaret show at the legendary Tropicana and meals at several fine dining establishments, including dinner at the renowned San Cristobal and lunch at the famed Floridita.

“It’s going to be a real journey for Hemingway buffs,” says Adele Williams, KWAHS Director of Education.
