Heisenberg by Simon Stephens makes its Key West Premiere for four performances only

Amid the hubbub of a London train station, Georgie spots Alex, a much older man, and plants a kiss on his neck. The electricity generated by this encounter impels these two strangers into an intriguing and life-altering game.
“Heisenberg” brings to dramatic life the uncertain and comic sparring match that is human connection. Written by Simon Stephens, author of Tony Award winning “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” “Heisenberg” will reunite Dennis Zacek (Director) and Mike Mulligan (Alex) who worked together on last season’s powerful hit play, “Blackbird” by David Harrower. Prominent Chicago actor Dana Black will join them to perform the role of Georgie.
When Georgie (Black), a 42 year old loud, aggressive and mercurial American whose job history keeps changing, meets Alex (Mulligan), a much older, subdued Irish butcher who has lived an uneventful life, six weeks of life-changing conversation ensues as the pair cross from London to New Jersey. Heisenberg, author of “The Uncertainty Principle,” is never mentioned in the play, but it is his famous idea about the limitations of observation that underpins the life affirming and ever-changing relationship of Georgie and Alex. As Georgie says in the play, “If you watch something closely enough you have no possible way of telling where it is going or how fast it’s getting there.”
Ben Brantley of The New York Times called the play “a probing work that considers the multiplicity of alternatives that could shape our lives at every moment.” Director Dennis Zacek, Artistic Director Emeritus of Tony Award recipient Victory Gardens Theater and former Resident Director at Fringe Theatre Key West comments that “this play provides two nuanced, exposed and sensual roles for two incredibly magnetic actors (Mike Mulligan and Dana Black) as they explore an improbable yet profoundly believable relationship.”
Mike Mulligan has been seen on all of Key West’s stages in his successful career as both a dramatic and comedic actor. Among his most well known roles are last season’s Ray in “Blackbird,” Salieri in “Amadeus,” Leonard in “Seminar” and “F” in “Cock” as well as numerous musical comedy performances. Dana Black is a Chicago based theatrical, TV and voiceover actor. She recently performed in Northlight Theatre’s critically acclaimed “The Book of Will,” “The Few” (Steep) and “Abraham Lincoln was a F@gg@t” (About Face) for which she received a 2015 Best Supporting Actress Jeff Award nomination. She is a graduate of The School at Steppenwolf and has also appeared on NBC’s “Chicago Med”.
British playwright Simon Stephens, “an uncannily subtle dramatist who never wears his depths on the surface” (Brantley), whose work includes “Harper Regan” and “Punk Rock” as well as “The Curious Incident…” was commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club.
“Heisenberg” premiered in 2015. It transferred to Broadway in 2016. Stephens called this work different than his other plays “I wanted to try and release the instinctive, the unpredictable. I knew how the characters were affecting each other, but didn’t know what they were going to say next. It was daring and uncertain, and exciting.”
The production team also includes Catherine Johnson (Stage Management), Don Lynch (Set Design) and Art Singley and Greg Rue of The Art of Sound (Lighting and Sound).
Performances will be held at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street. Tickets are on sale now through The Studios of Key West Box Office (same address). They may also be purchased on-line https://tskw.org or in person. Box-office hours are 10-4 Tuesday-Saturday.
Performances are Thursday January 25, Friday January 26, Saturday 27 at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3:00pm. Prices are $38 with a limited number of $55 VIP tickets available. VIP tickets provide priority reserved seating. Discount tickets are available for TSKW members.
