Guilty Verdict in Key West Animal Cruelty Case
Key West, FL – A disturbing case of animal cruelty in Key West has concluded with a guilty verdict against 28-year-old Billie Jean Beam, reached by a jury in just 33 minutes of deliberation. This case has highlighted a severe act of violence against a defenseless animal.
The incident unfolded when KWPD Officer Roman, on routine patrol near Southard Street and Duval Street, was alerted by local resident to an alarming situation. The individual reported witnessing Beam violently attack a lime brown and white Corgi. He observed Beam hurling her sandal at the dog, initially mistaking the target for a human. As he approached, he saw Beam repeatedly strike the dog, then aggressively grab its leash and yank the terrified animal from the passenger side of a nearby black pickup truck to a wall. During this ordeal, the dog was lifted completely off the ground, its body rigid and suspended by the leash in a manner that indicated intense fear and helplessness.
Another witness provided further details, noting Beam’s apparent intoxication and disregard for her pets earlier that evening at Willie T’s bar. His observations included Beam’s abrasive dismissal of concerns over the dog’s welfare after it had wandered back to the bar alone, visibly distressed.
Upon investigating at Willie T’s bar, police noted Beam’s argumentative behavior and signs of alcohol influence. The officers observed the Corgi without a leash, exhibiting signs of distress such as flinching, ear-tucking, and a tendency to cower, indicative of its recent traumatic experiences.
The subsequent discovery of the second dog and the collection of physical evidence, including the sandals Beam used in the assault, substantiated the charges leading to her arrest. Beam now faces up to 364 days in county jail, one year of probation, and mandatory fines and court costs.
Assistant State Attorney Madeline Thompson, reflecting on the trial, stated, “This verdict sends a clear message that our community has no tolerance for cruelty against animals. It’s vital that we stand as a voice for the voiceless and ensure that such abhorrent actions are met with appropriate consequences.”
State Attorney Dennis Ward thanked those involved in bringing the case to justice: “I extend my gratitude to those witnesses for his crucial role in stepping up to protect these vulnerable animals. His actions exemplify the vigilance needed in our community. Additionally, the Key West Police Department’s meticulous focus on this case, the jury’s prompt verdict, and Assistant State Attorney Thompson’s diligent prosecution affirm our collective commitment to combating animal cruelty. Let this case be a reminder that abusing defenseless animals is utterly unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law.
This case also underscores the community’s responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members and ensure that such acts of cruelty are not tolerated”.
