Governor Appoints Two to FKCC Board of Trustees
KEY WEST, FL, May 2, 2017—Florida Governor Rick Scott recently appointed two new members to the District Board of Trustees of Florida Keys Community College. Colonel John Domenech, of Big Pine Key, is appointed for a term beginning April 3, 2017, and ending May 31, 2020. Sheldon Suga, of Duck Key, fills a vacant seat and is appointed for a term beginning April 3, 2017, and ending May 31, 2017.
Both appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. Also on the seven-member governing board are Kevin Madok, Michael Puto, Stephanie Scuderi, Elena Spottswood, and Robert Stoky.
About Domenech
A native of Key West, John Domenech is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and business executive. Upon earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida, Domenech received a commission into the United States Army in 1979 based on his nuclear engineering skills. Leaving active duty in 1982, he served in a variety of Army Reserve and Army National Guard assignments including staff and command positions over the following 30 years.
Between 1983 and 2016, he served in the private sector in numerous management and leadership roles including president, chief executive officer, and chief operating officer for firms ranging from technology, pharmaceuticals, engineering, computer software, and intelligence. He recently retired from Leidos, an innovative technologies company, as a senior project manager.
Domenech and his wife Lisa of 45 years, have two children and three grandchildren. He also has a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and is currently completing his Ph.D in Systems Engineering at The George Washington University.
About Suga:
Sheldon Suga is the Vice President and Managing Director at Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. With over 35 years of industry experience, he is a seasoned hospitality executive. He started his career with a summer job as a room clerk in Niagara Falls, Canada which led him to pursue a degree in Hospitality Management at Ryerson University in Toronto. Upon graduation, Suga was accepted into ITT Sheraton’s General Management Training program. During his time with ITT Sheraton, he attained the ITT Ring of Quality Worldwide Team Award and served as general manager at properties in West Hartford, New York City, Halifax, La Jolla, and Los Angeles. He also worked in Tokyo and was country manager for ITT Sheraton. Additionally, Suga has also worked for Wyndham hotels and resorts in Atlanta and Puerto Rico as well as the Gaylord Palms in Orlando and the Gaylord National Resort.
Suga currently serves as the President of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) Monroe County Chapter, a director on the FRLA State Executive Committee, and a member of the District III Advisory Committee of the Monroe County TDC.
Suga and his wife Laura have enjoyed living in the Keys for eight years. He is an avid fly fisherman and enjoys running.
