Golf cart driver arrested for DUI
An intoxicated 20-year-old Key West, Florida man was arrested Saturday after he was stopped on U.S. 1 driving a Key West Golf Club golf cart.
James Riley Jackson was charged with DUI, larceny, vehicle theft, criminal mischief/property damage, possession of alcohol while underage, and possession of a fake ID.
The Sheriff’s Office stopped a northbound golf cart near Mile Marker 5 at approximately 5 p.m. following reports of a drunken golf cart driver leaving the Shell gas station at Key Haven. There were numerous opened and unopened bottles of alcoholic beverages in the golf cart. The golf cart roof was dented and bent, a portion of the windshield was missing and the front wheels were also damaged.
The Key West Police Department is investigating reports of earlier damage done to the Key West Golf Club course as well as a stolen golf cart. Jackson was taken to jail.
Multiple people cited for illegal camping
Seven mainland Florida people who were illegally camping just off U.S. 1 in the Lower Keys near Bahia Honda Bridge were cited Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Office was notified of tents near Mile Marker 35 and Deputies found a group of people there with tents and other camping gear set up.
The citations ranged from damaging wildlife to having fires in prohibited areas.

Two boat fires reported in separate incidents
The Sheriff’s Office was notified/responded to two separate boat fires in separate incidents in Key Largo on Saturday and Sunday. There were no reported serious injuries in either incident.
- The first was reported at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at the Kawama Yacht Club on Ocean Bay Drive. The vessel was a reported 24-foot center console. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission (FWC) is investigating.
- The second was reported at 8:20 a.m. Sunday in the bayside waters of Little Buttonwood Sound near Mile Marker 102. That boat was reported to be an unoccupied liveaboard vessel. The FWC is also investigating that fire.
