FRINGE PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE / It’s About Time
Fringe Theater has an established track record for presenting original works including Conch Republic the Musical, Cock Talk, and this season’s surprise hit Key West Characters. Next up is the world premiere of the new musical It’s About Time, which runs April 24 and 25 at the Key West Theater, located at 512 Eaton Street.
“New musical is little bit of a stretch,” says the playwright and composer Don Bearden, “since I began writing it about 10 years ago.” Audiences are more familiar with Don as an actor with Fringe (The Gin Game and Cock Talk), the Red Barn (With Bells On), and the Waterfront Playhouse (1776 and A Trip to Bountiful). “The Fringe Theatre gave me the first acting job I’ve had in 30 years and a leg up into the world of theatre here in Key West. Now they’re giving me the first ever production of something I’ve written.”
It’s About Time asks the age-old question “Does perfect love (or perfect casting) exist?” Two young theater producers prepare to open a play in the old Belasco Theatre in New York, but they can’t agree on the right leading lady. They discover a time-traveling key inside the old Belasco theater and soon find themselves “back in time” alongside a vintage version of the perfect leading lady. Can true love stand the test of time? Can their new play open on time?
The show is directed by Cameron Murray, who is well known for directing with Keys Kids as well as his work with the Waterfront Playhouse (including Forever Plaid, Me and Jezebel, Souvenir, Steppin’ Out, and Musicals of Musicals).
Musical direction is in the capable hands of Vincent Zito, who also worked to prep the score. He has musical directed shows at the Waterfront Playhouse (including She Loves Me and 1776), Tennessee Williams Theatre (La Cage aux Folles and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and the Fringe (Bernstein on Broadway – which he also produced). Vincent founded the Key West Pops Orchestra and co-founded the Island Opera Theatre.
The show is choreographed by Carolyn Cooper who audiences are familiar with as an actor, dancer, and choreographer. The cast includes Luke Fox, Rhett Kalman, Belle Jampol, Rosie Mayne, David Black, Vanessa McCaffrey, Mathias Maloff, John Reynolds, Martha Hooten, and Arthur Crocker.
This timeless love story runs for two nights only at the Key West Theater, April 24 and 25. Showtimes is 7pm (house opens at 6:30pm). Tickets at available at fringetheater.org.
