Free Reading of New Bowersox Play

As part of this year’s Summer Stage, TheatreXP will present a staged reading of “The Return”, the new original play by Key West playwright Bob Bowersox, whose previous plays, “Person of Interest”, “Moment of Grace”, and “The Poetry of Hearts”, went on to stellar productions at the Red Barn Theatre.

The reading will be at the Red Barn, 319 Duval Street in Key West, on Monday, July 11th, curtain at 7 pm. It is free of charge, no reservations are required.

The comedy centers on David Steele, the venerable anchorman for World News Network. For 35 years, Steele has been the most respected voice in television news, the Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite of his generation. But on this particular night, Steele announces live on-air that he is not who he has purported to be all these years, but is, in fact, actually Jesus Christ, returning because things are so botched up he could no longer sit on the sidelines and watch the world deteriorate any further. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose…so to speak. Is he actually Christ, or is he stark raving mad?

The reading will feature the talents of Tony Konrath, Tom Murtha, Karl M. Stahl, Melody G. Moore, Vanessa McCaffrey, and Wayne Dapser. It will be directed by Bowersox. Audience members will have the opportunity to comment on and discuss the play after the reading in a talk-back featuring Bowersox and the actors.

The reading is part of the South Florida Theatre League’s New Play Festival, and TheatreXP was chosen as the only Monroe County theatre company to participate in the statewide event. As with all Summer Stage events, the reading is sponsored by Royal Furniture, KONKLife, The Grand Café, Digital Island Media, Design Group Key West, Florida Weekly, and Blue Heaven. It is also supported by the Monroe County Tourist Developent Council and the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.
