Free music education school Bahama Village Music Program seeks Executive Director
Bahama Village Music Program, the Florida Keys’ only free and comprehensive music school serving more than 200 students, bids adieu to Executive Director Kätchen Duncan as she steps back after 15 years of leadership to focus on the arrival of her child, due in December. Duncan will return after maternity leave to continue teaching but will not resume the Executive Directorship for the non-profit organization. A search is underway within the Key West community.
The BVMP Executive Director responsibilities and activities are broad and considerable and affect both the long-term and daily program activities. The viability of the program relies on the participation and interaction of the Executive Director with student teachers, professional instructors, the Board of Directors, and the community that the program serves.
“The position requires a forward-thinker ready to step into all that entails running a non-profit organization and really embracing their role as ambassador of our organization, says Duncan. “It’s because of our relationships with this amazing community and our many supporters that we have been able to continue doing what we do, year after year, while growing to serve more children through the gift of free music education.”
Throughout the program’s two decades, the Bahama Village Music Program has offered over 20,000 free lessons taught by more than a dozen student teachers, professional instructors, and dedicated volunteers to over 2,000 children who could not otherwise afford it. Outreach programs include Keys Kids Junior, House of Pan Steel Pan Band at Horace O’Bryant School, Dance Key West dance lessons, a Junkanoo music program, free summer camps for 25 children with the most need, and annual full-tuition scholarships & grants to student teachers to attend the Berklee College of Music’s “Aspire,” a five-week music performance intensive.
Interested applicants should be passionate about and dedicated to the program’s mission of music for every child while being capable of general oversight, management, fundraising, and outreach while managing various multi-task challenges. The position is supported by long-serving staff and dedicated student and professional instructors.
“BVMP and our mission of music for every child is so important to me and our incredible staff,” says Duncan. “We hope the right person is ready to help us keep the music playing for 20 more years!”
Interested applicants should email a resume to [email protected]. Applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview. Celebrating 20 years of free music education. It takes a village.
