Former City Employee Arrested for Theft

A former Key West City employee was arrested Wednesday night after a Key West Police Detectives’ investigation into a number of suspicious purchases on City accounts.

Trenton Lamont Richardson, 32, is facing charges for an organized scheme to defraud after City officials discovered a number of suspicious purchases made with City funds at several home improvement and hardware retailers.

Richardson was confronted about the incident by his supervisors and admitted to several of the purchases. Richardson’s employment was subsequently terminated after City officials learned of the theft.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives were able to locate more than $7,000 in unauthorized purchases. Detectives met with Richardson and interviewed him about the allegations against him. Richardson was unable to provide Detectives with an explanation to justify the purchases. Richardson admitted to using City government equipment to facilitate personal construction side employment.

The investigation revealed that Richardson made numerous frivolous purchases, including two Yeti coolers and electric tools that were outside the scope of his job duties. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
