Florida’s floating lab to visit Key West

The new state-of-the-art R/V W. T. Hogarth will dock in Key West on Friday, Feb. 2, as it continues a tour of Florida ports. The 78-foot research vessel, known as Florida’s floating lab, is owned by the Florida Institute of Oceanography, which also operates the Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton.

The 139-ton vessel is equipped with wet and dry labs and advanced marine technology, plus, berths for 10 scientists and a crew of four. It is named for former FIO Director William T. Hogarth, who also served as assistant administrator of NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services.

FIO is an Academic Infrastructure Support Organization established by the Florida Board of Governors to provide support and share marine science resources between the state’s universities and private, non-profit marine research entities.
