Florida Keys Wildlife Society launches this year’s Monthly Full Moon Kayak excursions
Florida Keys Wildlife Society, the friends group to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, kicks off this season’s Full Moon Kayak excursions on Monday, January 29th from 4:00pm – 6:00pm, departing Big Pine Kayak Adventures on Bogey Road on Big Pine Key.
The 2-hour paddle traverses through Big Pine’s National Key Deer Refuge, one of four wildlife refuges in the Florida Keys and home to the Refuges’ Visitor Center, the Key Deer Bookstore, and the endangered Key deer.
“Kayaking in the refuge is a fantastic way to experience nature,” says Florida Keys Wildlife Society board member Nancy Chatelaine. “Getting out on the water in the Key Deer Refuge is a fun excursion for visitors and a nice change of pace for locals.”
The Society (formerly known as FAVOR- Friends and Volunteers of Refuges), is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the National Wildlife Refuges of the Florida Keys through education, advocacy, volunteerism, and fundraising; They established the excursions several years ago to encourage people to get outside and enjoy the abundant natural resources of the National Key Deer Refuge.
The January- June 2018 Full Moon Kayak excursions includes kayak, gear, and an experienced guide, with a $25 donation to benefit local wildlife through the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. Dates and times future excursions are as follows: Tuesday, February 27 from 5:00pm-7:00pm; Thursday, March 29 from 6:30pm-8:30pm; Friday, April 27 from 6:30pm-8:30pm; Sunday, May 27 from 6:30pm-8:30 pm; and Tuesday, June 26 from 6:30pm-8:30pm. For those interested in learning about or experiencing the wildlife in all of the Florida Keys Wildlife Refuges, The Society’s annual Outdoor Fest offers opportunities to experience the wildlife in Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and Key West National Wildlife Refuge with a week of family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities. This year’s fest is set for Saturday, March 10 through Saturday, March 17.
