MARATHON, FL – The State of Florida issued Monroe County a mandate in 1998 to install central sewer systems throughout the island chain due to deteriorating nearshore waters.
For a small county with challenging island geography, it was a daunting task. Twenty years later, and with a price tag at nearly $1 billion for the cost of construction of the wastewater plants and systems and the tens of thousands of residential and business hook ups, all the major systems are complete.
It was a complex puzzle. The last piece, and the most challenging – the Cudjoe Regional Wastewater System – was recently completed.
