Florida Department of Health in Monroe County Supports Summer BreakSpot Program
Monroe County – The Summer BreakSpot program has started at various locations throughout the Florida Keys where children and teens 18 years and younger can find free nutritious meals in safe and fun environments. In addition to the five schools throughout Monroe County that are open for breakfast and lunch from June 14th to mid-July, there are many open community sites in Key West and one in Key Largo for any child or teen to visit all summer long.
These Summer BreakSpot sites are made possible in the Florida Keys through the sponsorship of Monroe County School District Food and Nutrition Services Department and Star of the Sea Outreach Mission. The program is part of the national Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered in Florida by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Many community partners such as the United Way of the Florida Keys, Florida Impact, the City of Key West, and many dedicated staff, teachers, and volunteers at each of the locations listed below ensure that kids and teens in the county have access to these meals and engaging activities in the summer months.
The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County encourages Keys families to look into the Summer BreakSpot program as part of the department’s Healthiest Weight Florida Initiative. Healthiest Weight Florida is a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Florida’s children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living.
Families can find sites near them via texting “FoodFL” to 877-877, the website www.summerfoodflorida.org, or by calling 2-1-1. Sites that are currently open for summer meals follow. Please note, sites and times of service may change.
