FKSPCA: RESCUE TAILS / “LUCKY”
BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA
Lucky’s life surely didn’t start out “lucky.” Born on the streets of Homestead, the young Golden Retriever mix raised herself. With no family to feed her and no pack to protect her, Lucky survived as a loner, rooting in the dirt for cockroaches and worms.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan came along. Unlike many street dogs, Lucky was young enough that she wasn’t completely fearful of people. Even luckier, her finder was an advanced dog owner with a good knowledge of animal behavior and personalities. He took the time to create a safe and loving environment for Lucky in addition to having her treated, vaccinated, spayed and micro-chipped by a local Veterinarian.
For the first time in her life, Lucky realized that she was safe in a home and bonded to her new human. As she grew closer to her rescuer, she became increasingly jealous of the other dog in the home, her Shepherd sister. As time wore on, the fights became more often and more difficult to control. Finally, with a heavy heart, the decision was made to surrender Lucky to our Marathon Campus in the hope of finding a home where she could be the only dog.
With her gorgeous good looks and charming personality, it did not take Lucky long to find a family. Several years ago, a lovely Key West couple had lost their beloved pet who looked shockingly similar to Lucky. They had waited a long time for the right dog to come into their lives and were a perfect match for Lucky! The couple couldn’t be happier and today, Lucky is living the life that a street dog from Homestead could only dream of!
