FKMCD Executive Director to Move to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

July 28, 2016, Key West – Florida Keys Mosquito Control District announced today that Michael Doyle is leaving his post as the Executive Director, effective September 1, 2016.
Doyle has accepted an Entomologist position with the Communicable Disease Branch of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

“This new opportunity will allow me to spend more time with my family and be an integral part in strengthening and assisting in coordinating the mosquito-borne disease response program in North Carolina,” said Doyle. “Also, I will have the ability to engage with educators and researchers from NC State, who are on the forefront of Zika research. This new challenge is exciting and I believe that my experience will lend itself to making a difference in public health in North Carolina.”

The Board of Commissioners will name an Interim Executive Director at the August 16, 2016, regular board meeting.

“Michael Doyle is a technically competent and forward thinking leader,” stated Board Chairman Phil Goodman, “and the District has made a lot of progress under his command. Although we haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on various issues, it has been a pleasure working with him the last five years and he will be sorely missed.

I wish he and his family the very best as they begin their new life in North Carolina. We will soon begin our search to find a new Director. I believe it is important to all of us in this community to find a new Director with similar innovative qualities as Michael.”

Doyle will begin his new position with the State of North Carolina on September 19, 2016.

“Michael’s experience and expertise in vector control is a welcome addition to the mosquito surveillance and Zika virus preparedness work already underway in North Carolina,” said State Public Health Veterinarian Carl Williams, DVM. “We look forward to continuing and expanding this work with Michael on board.”

Finally, Doyle will continue his efforts exploring the use of transgenic mosquitoes in the fight against vector-borne diseases.

“We are very excited to have Michael Doyle coming to North Carolina,” said Dr. Fred Gould, Co-Director of the Genetic Engineering and Society Center NCSU, “where he can interact more closely with the Genetic Engineering and Society program that examines policy issues related to the use of transgenic pests.”
