FKCC Presents Talk on Hydrokinetic Power Production

VIP Series features Vision, Ideas, and Perspectives

Dr. James VanZweiten (above), Assistant Professor at FAU’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center, headlines the second session of FKCC’s 2017 V.I.P. Series with a presentation on hydrokinetic power production in the U.S. on Tuesday, February 7 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre.

KEY WEST, FL, January 30, 2017— Florida Keys Community College’s VIP Series of speakers continues with “Tidal, Ocean Current, and River Based In-Stream Hydrokinetic Power Production in the U.S.” on Tuesday, February 7 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus. Dr. James VanZweiten, an Assistant Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center, will lead this locally relevant and timely presentation.

Filled with wonder, beauty, and life, the waters surrounding the Florida Keys have long been integral to island life, culture, and economy. Yet those same waters also possess an untapped, but incredibly strong power: clean, renewable energy. Water movement—like the constant flow of the Gulf Stream and daily cycle of tides—can provide a highly-concentrated resource of green electricity. This presentation will explore technologies used to harness marine renewable energy with a focus on Florida’s opportunities.

FKCC is working to unlock the great potential of hydrokinetic energy in the Keys through a new degree in Engineering Technology that concentrates on tidal power, as well as wind and solar. The College’s new program, created to train twenty-first century green technology workforce starting in August, is strengthened by its industry partners including Dr. VanZweiten and FAU.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Admission is free for students at FKCC and Monroe County schools.
