Deadline for The Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation student essay competition is January 15

Interested Monroe County high school students are reminded that the deadline for the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation student essay contest is January 15, 2023.

The competition, organized and presented by The Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation in partnership with The Society of Presidential Descendants, is open to all Monroe County students currently enrolled in grades 9-12, who have performed volunteer service work within the past two years, including home schooled and charter school students.

First, Second, and Third Place winners will receive cash prizes and tickets to attend a Saturday, February 18, 2023 forum held on the grounds of the historic Harry S. Truman Little White House where a gathering of U.S. presidential descendants will engage in a moderated discussion before a live audience. Part of the annual “Presidential Families Weekend and Forum,” this year’s forum theme, and the topic of the student essays, is “Working Across the Aisle: American Bipartisanship.”

Reflecting this year’s theme, student competitors will research and write about an American president who reached across the aisle to achieve a common goal, as Harry S. Truman, a Democrat, did when he broke with his party and appointed Ohio senator Harold Burton, a Republican, to a seat on the Supreme Court.

Following the February 18 forum, presidential descendants will introduce the essay winners to the audience.
