Crane falls on man in Marathon
A Fort Pierce man, working with a crew on a construction crane Wednesday, was injured when the crane fell on him.
The incident took place at 9 a.m. at a construction site on Sadowski Causeway in Key Colony Beach. When deputies arrived to the emergency call, they found 46 year old Joe Stutzman trapped under the boom of a crane which had fallen on him.
Paramedics also arrived on scene and with the help of deputies, were able to lift the boom off of Stutzman who was subsequently airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami by Monroe County’s Trauma Star helicopter.
According to reports, the crane is owned by Waterfront Construction; the crane is located on a barge in the area. Southeast Marine Construction company subcontracted with the company to put a new dock in that location.
There were numerous witnesses to the incident who were interviewed. They all gave consistent statements indicating the victim was attempting to extend the boom when it collapsed on him. No foul play is suspected.
