County Roads Dept Helps in Fight Against Invasive Species in the Florida Keys
KEY LARGO, FL – On Friday, the Monroe County Roads and Bridges Department in the Upper Keys had a special python and invasive species training given by Refuge Manager Jeremy Dixon of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Key Largo. Invasive species compete with native wildlife, disrupting the fragile ecosystem. The Roads Department can help identify invasive species in the wild and report them to the appropriate authorities when they are found. In addition, some of the Roads Department staff completed part one of a two-part training with FWC as “python patrol” to be certified to identify, capture, and humanely dispose of invasive pythons when they come across them. If the public comes across a python, they should call 1-888-Ive-got1 (1-888-483-4681) or visit www.Ivegot1.org to report the location of the sighting.
