County Facilities Employees Install Accessible Playground Swing and Bring Joy to Key Largo Child
KEY LARGO, FL – Earlier this year, Key Largo resident Jessica Pera reached out to the Monroe County Facilities Department and Robert Glassmer, Monroe County Administrator of Buildings, Parks and Beaches in the Upper Keys, to inquire about inclusive playground areas that can accommodate children with special needs. Her son, Blake, now 6 years old, loves to swing but had outgrown the infant swings at the park.
Glassmer and staff found an accessible swing for older children with disabilities and had it installed. The team added a custom “Blake” sign on the swing to make the moment even more special. Blake was beyond excited on his first swing, and Glassmer joined in on the fun.
“This adventurous, active, and fun boy has all the energy of a typical kid but a body that just doesn’t cooperate,” said Pera. “We are so grateful for this wonderful, amazing community and to the Monroe County staff. It was incredible how this all came together.”
