MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – “Monroe County students earned over 20,000 in cash incentives this week,” Superintendent Mark Porter announced. “One hundred and seven students earned industry certifications in various computer science courses and received $50 to $500 cash incentive prizes from <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ during the 3rd Awards Presentation for this school year.”
“Students earned certifications in Microsoft Office, Adobe and the IC3 Digital Literacy program, starting as early as 5th grade,” Porter continued. “Almost 200 certificates have been so far, and we are well on our way to our target of 1,000 for this school year. Students are working towards the 4rd Awards Week which will be in May.”
“Microsoft Office Specialist certifications are on the rise,” Career and Technical Education Director, Dr. Jerry Caputo announced, “our students earned 34 certifications that require passing scores in three individual certifications, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.” Caputo also noted that students earned 20 certifications in Adobe products, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro.
“Coral Shores senior, and county-wide certification leader, Tyler Arnold, is well on his way to earning every certification the district offers,” explained his teacher Linda Britton. “To date Tyler has earned $1,400 in <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ incentives for certifying in multiple Microsoft and Adobe products.”
“Certifications in IC3 Digital Literacy components: IC3 Spark, IC3 Computing Fundamentals, IC3 Key Applications, and IC3 Living Online are growing exponentially throughout the district,” according to Sibba Mira, who is the District Career and Technical Education Specialist for all <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ certificates. “We currently have over 100 5th-8th grade students certified and expect triple that before the end of the year.” Mira noted that the IC3 Digital Literacy program is now offered in every Monroe County elementary and middle school district-wide.
“The goal is to increase the number of certifications from 300 the year before to 1,000 in the 2017-2018 school year,” Porter emphasized. “Thanks again to Key West philanthropists John Padget and Jacob Dekker for their donation so we can continue honoring the students who bulking up on their digital skills.”
