<Monroe /> COMPUTE$ STUDENTS BREAK RECORDS

Fourth Round Prizes Awarded

“Monroe’s tech-savvy students shattered district records and will receive over $16,000 in prizes this week, ending the 4th round competition for <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ prizes,” according to Sibba Mira, Career and Technical Education Coordinator. “Additional students are working hard to qualify for more national certifications during the 5th and 6th rounds in May and June.”

Coral Shores senior, Miguel Quezada, continues to lead the district with 9 industry certifications, earning him a total of $900 in prize money,” explained Superintendent Mark Porter. “Runner-up with $850 is HOB 8th grader, David Crespo who has completed his Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificate, plus MOS Master, and Adobe Photoshop. The youngest winners in the MOS category are 7th graders Dylan Demeza—Sugarloaf School and Olivia Hughes, Madison Van Diver, and Isabella Salvatore—Plantation Key School. Over 80 students in grades 7 through 12 have earned the landmark MOS certificate this year.”

We have already exceeded last year’s totals,” Mira explained, “One reason for the tremendous growth is greater participation by middle school students who scored 41% of the 127 prizes in this round.”

My students are so excited about certifying, and they get high school credit,” said Lisa Castillo, Horace O’Bryant School digital information technology instructor. “The prizes, plus taking a high school level course and getting high school credits are big motivators.” Students in grades 5-8 can earn entry level digital literacy certifications and prizes from <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ at all district middle and elementary schools.

I predict that there will be at least 200 more students earning prizes from $50 to $250 before the year is finished, Porter said. “We expect the number of students earning industry certifications will continue growing, and we plan additional digital tech courses in the next school year.”
