MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – “Forty-two Monroe County students made us proud this week,” Superintendent Mark Porter announced.  “They earned industry certifications in various computer science courses and received $50 to $500 cash incentive prizes from <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ during the 2^nd Awards Presentation for this school year.”

“Students earned certifications in Microsoft Office, Adobe and the IC3 Digital Literacy program, starting as early as 6^th grade,” Porter continued.  “A total of 66 certificates have been earned already, and we are well on our way to our target of 1,000 for this school year.  Students are working towards the 3^rd Awards Week which will be in March.”

“County leader with $750 in prize money is Coral Shores senior Tyler Arnold,” explained his teacher Linda Britton. “He was the first to qualify for MOS-Master after having completed Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) with certificates in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in November.”

“Sugarloaf School 8^th grader Anissa Norat-Nieves got $500 for being the first middle school student to earn the MOS Specialist title, which includes mastery in PowerPoint, Word and Excel,” according to Sibba Mira, who is the District Career and Technical Education Specialist for all <Monroe /> COMPUTE$ certificates.  “Sugarloaf added another honor as 7^th grader David Taulbee got $200 as the first to complete all four IC3 Digital Literacy components:  IC3 Spark, IC3 Computing Fundamentals, IC3 Key Applications, and IC3 Living Online.”

 “We got the most certifications in this round,” HOB teacher Phillip Baucom announced, “our students earned 19 of the awards.”  Additional cash incentives were awarded to students at Key West High School and Coral Shores High School that completed ADOBE industry certifications.

 “The goal is to increase the number of certifications from 300 the year before to 1,000 in the 2017-2018 school year,” Porter emphasized.  “Thanks again to Key West philanthropists John Padget and Jacob Dekker for their donation so we can continue honoring the students who bulking up on their digital skills.”
