COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT FDOT TO DESIGNATE COW KEY CHANNEL BRIDGE AS CHERYL H. CATES MEMORIAL BRIDGE

KEY WEST, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution at today’s meeting to support the designation of the Cow Key Channel Bridge leading into Key West as the “Cheryl H. Cates Memorial Bridge” and requested the Florida Department of Transportation place appropriate signage reflecting the designation. The City of Key West made a similar resolution earlier this week.

Cheryl Cates moved to Key West in 1955 and married Craig Cates in 1971, joining a family with a long legacy of public service to Key West and the Florida Keys. Her public and philanthropic activities included Wesley House Family Services, Samuel’s House, Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, and Kids Come First, among many others.

“She elegantly built bridges between people and organizations to achieve community goals,” said the resolution. “She championed the cause of improving the lives of children and worked for decades to enhance the quality of life for all in the City of Key West and Monroe County.”

The Florida Legislature established the process for naming transportation facilities in memory of an individual in chapters 99-385 and 2003-286, Laws of Florida, codified at F.S. 334.071. The process requires each affected local government to adopt a resolution of support before a marker can be placed.
