COLOR THE USS LENAH HIGBEE CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The Navy League, Key West Commissioning Committee and the Monroe County School District proudly announces the winners of the “Color the USS LENAH HIGBEE” Coloring Contest: First Place: VIOLET MESSINA, SUGARLOAF SCHOOL; Second Place: PENELOPE RANDALL, BIG PINE ACADEMY; Third Place: AIDEN STETTNER, SUGARLOAF SCHOOL. Honorable Mention: ALEXANDER LATALA, SIGSBEE CHARTER; ADAM AWAN, MAY SANDS; KATALAYA BROWN, HOB; GRACE LOPEZ, SUGARLOAF; CAMILA ARRAZCAETA, BIG PINE ACADEMY; NIKOL STANKOVA, BASILICA SCHOOL; and LINCOLN NILES, POINCIANA.
Over 165 entries were received from grade two students at Sigsbee Charter, May Sands Montessori, Poinciana, Gerald Adams, Horace O’Bryant, Sugarloaf, Big Pine Academy, Grace Lutheran, and The Basilica School. Contest rules were available in English, Spanish, and Creole.
First Place winner, Violet Messina, will receive a pizza party for her class and a VIP tour of the USS Lenah Higbee the week of May 8, 2023 for her family. Second and Third Place winners will receive a VIP tour of the ship for their families. The Top Ten winning entries will be on display at the Key West Woman’s Club, 319 Duval Street, Key West, 10 April -10 May, 10AM – 3:30PM, Monday through Friday.
Jennifer C. Barrios, Monroe County School District, Social Studies Coordinator, presented the ribbons and awards to the winners in their classrooms.
The Navy League, Key West Council is the proud sponsor of the upcoming commissioning of the USS Lenah Sutcliffe HIGBEE (DDG 123), scheduled for 13 May 2023, 10AM at the outer Mole Pier, Key West, FL. The commissioning ceremony, the culmination of a week of events for the crew of 350, their families, and as many as 5,000 visitors, will be open to all, with free tickets available.
The HIGBEE, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, is named for Navy Nurse pioneer, Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee. Nurse Higbee was the first woman to receive the Navy Cross for her exemplary work as Superintendent of the newly formed U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War I.
