City Commission Honors Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin

Commissioners Mary Lou Hoover and Monica Haskell, Vice Mayor Lissette Carey, Mayor Danise “Deedee” Henriquez, Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin, and Commissioners Donie Lee and Sam Kaufman.

Mayor Danise “Deedee” Henriquez and the Key West City Commission honored retiring Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin for her 40 years of dedicated service to the community.

Griffin was initially hired by Billy Freeman as a clerk typist in 1984 before there were computers and voters were using lever machines. She has worked in every clerical position in the elections office under five Supervisors of Elections. When her predecessor Harry Sawyer retired in 2012, she was elected.

“Joyce has taken great pride in working for the Supervisor of Elections office,” reads the proclamation, “often referring to herself as a ‘do it girl’ because she gets the job done. She is referred to as Mamma Bear by her staff.”

A tearful Griffin accepted the honor, taking time to thank all public works staffers as the unsung heroes of public service. She thanked the military for the their sacrifices that ensure our freedom. She thanked the community for their trust.

She assured the community that her staff and poll workers will continue to provide a free democratic process.

“Thank you to the poll workers,” she said. “They are the soldiers on the field, the soldiers of democracy. They are good people. Please give the poll workers and my staff the honor that you have just given me.”

“After 40 years of dedicated service to Monroe County,” reads the proclamation, “we wish Joyce a wonderful and fulfilling retirement. Her hard work, commitment, and contributions have made a lasting impact on the community’”
