KEY WEST, FL, May 23, 2020— “Traditionally, this weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer with barbecues, boating, and fireworks. This Memorial Day, in the age of COVID-19, the celebrations may not be as full or as festive, but dedicating a day to honor those who have sacrificed for our country seems insufficient given the level of sacrifice that that Memorial Day represents. I ask our community to join the CFK family to reflect on why this day is important. Memorial Day is a time to pay special attention to our heroes, both those who have fallen and those who are still living. We thank our military, as well as law enforcement officers, healthcare professionals, and other first responders for working tirelessly to protect American lives.
CFK is grateful to all servicemen and women and their families for their commitment and sacrifices, and for their continued service to protect our lives and our freedom. Over the years, the College has benefitted from the contributions of many veterans. Each one deserves special recognition. Today, I salute a fallen hero whose legacy of helping others lived beyond his days in combat and especially through a scholarship established by the Southernmost Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3911 in 2015.
Born in Pittsburgh and raised in New York, Ed Moran joined the U.S. Marine Corps fresh out of high school and served two tours in Vietnam. He completed his service with an honorable discharge in 1974. Moran went on to work as a helicopter mechanic in Ohio and later became a chief engineer in the oil fields of Texas and Louisiana.
Ed moved to Key West and found an enjoyable life of fishing, writing, and giving back to the veteran community for 28 years. His angling skills led him to win the title of “Mate of the Year” in the 1980s and his passion for writing helped him become a published author. Ed met the love of his life, Lucy, in 1992. She moved to Key West and the two married shortly thereafter.
An active member of VFW Post 3911, Ed held multiple positions and eventually became Commander. Ed and Lucy were tireless fundraisers for the post’s many causes. Even after Ed’s passing in 2012, Lucy remained involved with VFW Post 3911. For the past five years, VFW Post 3911 has honored their former leader’s memory through the Ed Moran Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to veterans, service members, and their dependents to help them pursue their academic goals at CFK.
On behalf of the CFK family, I salute Marine Corps veteran Ed Moran this Memorial Day. We will continue to value your service and dedication to our country and community. Your service is an inspiration to all.”
