Candidate for BOCC Chris Massicotte Disappointed in Tavernier Overlay District Vote
Monroe County, FL – February 15, 2024 – Today, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted 4-1 in favor of the Tavernier Overlay District, a decision that has sparked outrage among local residents. Despite overwhelming opposition from the community and the professional recommendations of county staff. “I’m very disappointed in the BOCC, including my opponent, who chose to advance a plan that prioritizes the interests of big developers over the needs and desires of the people they are supposed to be serving”. Massicotte said.
The approval of this overlay district paves the way for the construction of an unnecessary and oversized grocery store, disregarding the concerns raised by countless residents who took time out of their day to voice their opposition. Rather than heeding the advice of county staff who conducted thorough studies, the BOCC chose to cave to pressure from big developers, hiding behind the token gesture of adding a mere 86 affordable housing units.
During the meeting, Mr. Scholl remarked, “All of Florida is a traffic jam… Traffic isn’t going to get any better.” “I find that defeatist statement unacceptable and I won’t give up on protecting our safety that easily.” Chris added. “By blindly catering to the demands of big developers, we are only exacerbating the already hazardous conditions on US1, putting the lives of Keys’ residents at risk. It is the duty of the BOCC to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community, and this decision flies in the face of that responsibility.”
As a candidate for Commissioner, I am committed to listening to the voices of our community and advocating for solutions that align with our local needs, desires, and safety concerns. Unlike my opponent, I will not shy away from standing up to big developers and fighting for what is best for the future of the Florida Keys.
