Breastfeeding Resources Offered to Florida Keys Businesses for Employees
(Monroe County, FL) – The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition (FKHSC), in partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, provides breastfeeding support through certified lactation counselors (CLC) and offers guidance to create lactation rooms to encourage breastfeeding parents in the workplace.
“While breastfeeding is natural, it can also be challenging,” said Arianne Nesbit, CEO of FKHSC. “We are thrilled to have ten new certified lactation counselors in training who can empower, educate, and support breastfeeding moms in the Florida Keys. Addressing fears and concerns with a non-judgmental, evidence-based CLC can make all the difference in a breastfeeding journey.”
The FKHSC has funding for three more schools or businesses to create lactation rooms for new moms transitioning back to the workplace after maternity leave. Even further, they are offering to lead businesses in their efforts to develop breastfeeding-friendly practices, which have been proven to increase employee productivity and loyalty. Businesses, small or large that commit to becoming breastfeeding-friendly workplaces will have access to resources to make it easier to meet the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act to provide reasonable break time and a private space (other than a bathroom) to pump at work.
These new breastfeeding programs are available through grant funding by NACCHO. The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition was chosen as one of ten national organizations that supports local approaches for breastfeeding protection, promotion, and support. This grant funding and the support of the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County are making breastfeeding resources even more accessible to underserved communities.
