Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission proclaimed October Breast Cancer Awareness Month during the monthly commission meeting.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer of women in the United States except skin cancer and accounts for about 30 percent of all new cases of female cancer each year. In addition, there are about 2,700 cases of breast cancer in men every year.

According to the Monr County Health Department, this county has a higher death rate from breast cancer than the state average and a lower percentage of women who have had a mammogram in the past two years.

“Early detection is one of the most important strategies for treating breast cancer successfully, and regular screenings are the most reliable way to detect it,” reads the proclamation. “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to spread the important message of early detection, screening, and prevention to women and men in order to prevent additional diagnoses, or even breast cancer deaths.”
