Body found on Boot Key
The body of a man was found on Boot Key in Marathon Saturday morning.
The body was found in an area where the homeless are known to camp.
Identification is pending notification of next-of-kin.
Foul play does not appear to be a factor.
Autopsy results are pending.
Man arrested in Big Coppitt Key stabbing/slashing
A 70-year-old Big Coppitt Key man stabbed another man other during a fight Friday.
Steven Alan Santana was charged with aggravated assault.
The victim stated he had been drinking and smoking marijuana with others at a residence with multiple units on Puerta Drive. The victim stated Santana (whom he had just met) allowed him to sleep overnight in his camper on the property because the victim was too intoxicated to drive home. The victim stated he went to sleep in the rear of the camper and Santana slept on the couch in the front of the camper.
The victim stated he awoke at approximately 1:30 a.m. with Santana was naked and attempting to perform a sex act on him. The victim began fighting Santana off.
The victim said Santana grabbed what appeared to be a knife and cut him several times before he was able to get out of the camper.
The victim had several lacerations and a puncture wound on his arms. There were lines and droplets of blood on the victim’s chest.
Santana was taken to jail.
Large amount of cocaine found
The Sheriff’s Office was called to the 500 block of Burton Drive in Tavernier at approximately 5:42 p.m. Friday after a large amount of suspected cocaine was found washed ashore.
The package was found near the Ocean Pointe Condominiums in the mangroves along the shoreline. The large package contained multiple smaller packages tightly packed with black tape. Its contents field-tested positive for cocaine.
The entire package weighed 71.6 pounds.
