Beautifying While Recycling

The City of Key West has installed 18 new ash tray containers all along the Duval Loop as just another further effort to beautify Keep Key West Beautiful.

The self-contained receptacles are at all the Duval Loop bus stops and one at the Southernmost Buoy as part of Keep Key West Beautiful’ s Cigarette Recycling Program with TerraCycle.

Six more will be installed at different locations including the White Street Pier, Indigenous Park Bocce Courts, and other parks.

Every year, billions of cigarette butts end up in dumpsters and landfills, or get tossed as litter on shorelines, parks, streets and sidewalks across the U.S.

TerraCycle, with funding from Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, collects the waste through this program, which is recycled into a variety of industrial products, such as plastic pallets, and any remaining tobacco is recycled as compost.

The goal is to prevent cigarette waste from entering our waterways and becoming microplastics or something that sea animals eat.  Keep Key West Beautiful also collects cigarette waste from local businesses and residents for recycling.
