Bank Robber Apprehended Quickly

Key West Police officers apprehended an alleged bank robber this morning just 20 minutes after the 911 call came in.

Jonathan Robert Meyers, 45, of Nokomis, Florida is currently in custody after allegedly walking into the Simonton Street branch of Centennial Bank and robbing it. Police received the call at 9:18, just after the suspect left the bank.

Surveillance video showed the suspect heading west on foot. He was described as a white man with gray and possibly thinning hair and wearing a black Raiders t-shirt.

While police fanned out, a call came in from a suspicious upper Duval café owner who said a man was tipping $50 bills. Another call came in from a cab driver who saw a man fitting the suspect’s description walking near LaTeDa.

Police closed in on Meyers at the intersection of Duval and Catherine streets and detained him at 9:38. Meyers was carrying the undisclosed amount of money, and the officers saw him throw it behind a fence as they approached him.

The investigation still unfolding and charges are pending. Meyers has an extensive criminal history.
