Archeological exploration commenced July 10th at The Oldest House Museum and Garden
(Key West, Florida) – Old Island Restoration Foundation (OIRF) announced today that in cooperation with the University of Miami (UM), an archeological surface exploration began July 10th at the Oldest House Museum located at 322 Duval Street. The dig kicks off the major landscaping renovation project scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2021 at the Oldest House Garden providing an updated venue space for special events and functions. Key West Mayor Terri Johnston accompanied by Dr. Shirley Freeman, Past Mayor of Monroe County and her partner Harvey Server were at the site to welcome the team from University of Miami.
Key West native, Monica Faraldo, Professor of Archeology from the University of Miami led students on the archeological dig. The purpose of the surface dig is to retrieve objects used by early American seafaring families who settled in Key West during the 1820’s -30’s. Once the objects are cleaned and catalogued the artifacts will be on exhibit at the Oldest House serving to interpret the lifestyle of Key West’s earliest American inhabitants, before going to the State of Florida archives.
Key West, The Florida Keys Tourist Development Council and generous Old Island members Angie Majors and Linda Downs have made the renovation possible. In 2022 Key West’s bicentennial, The Oldest House, OIRF’s headquarters will become the center for information of all things #KeyWest200.

Old Island Restoration Foundation was founded in 1960 to stop the destruction of old town and to promote the preservation and restoration of historically significant buildings. During the 1950’s many valued architectural treasures were lost due to neglect or new development. These events galvanized preservationists to organize the nonprofit Old Island Restoration Foundation. Over the years, Old Island Restoration Foundation has raised and granted hundreds of thousands of dollars to maintain The Oldest House Museum and to award grants to restore historical buildings in Key West, including Old City Hall, The Custom House, The Martello Forts, The Key West Lighthouse, The Woman’s Club, several churches and more.
