Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority Advances Water Quality Improvement
Continuing its efforts to improve wastewater treatment and, consequently, nearshore water quality, The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority recently redirected wastewater flows from the Key Haven Wastewater Treatment Plant, along with flows from the recently decommissioned Boca Chica Wastewater Treatment Plant to its Big Coppitt Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility (BCWWTF).
Prior to being acquired by the Authority, the antiquated facilities utilized outdated technology and fell short of regulatory standards. After significant investment and upgrades an additional 120,000 gallons of wastewater per day will receive advanced wastewater treatment, effectively removing an additional 170,000 pounds of nutrients and primary pollutants per year at the BCWWTF. In addition to increased nutrient removal the improvements allow for increased operational efficiencies, the removal of unsightly infrastructure and the maintenance required for these systems.
The Authority now operates and maintains wastewater treatment and collection systems in the Lower Keys from Key Haven to Big Pine Key, including all Navy facilities. The Authority also operates and maintains the Conch Key and Duck Key systems as well as the Norman Anderson Water Quality Improvement Facility in the City of Layton.
