ACLU of Florida Collier County Chapter Hosts “It’s About More Than the Cake” Panel to Discuss the First Amendment and Anti-Discrimination Laws
NAPLES, FL – The Collier County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida presents its panel discussion, “It’s About More than the Cake”, to host an important conversation on the First Amendment and anti-discrimination laws. The panel, which takes place on Saturday, January 13, 2018, 1:30-4:00pm at the Universalist Unitarian Congregation (6340 Napa Woods Way Naples, FL), is free and open to the community.
On December 5, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on whether a business open to the public has a constitutional right to discriminate in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The court’s decision could determine whether LGBT people, religious minorities, people of color, and women are able to shop and access services the same way as everyone else. Opponents, backed by the Trump administration, are asking for a constitutional right to discriminate.
This spirited conversation will be led by two Naples-area attorneys who have long been involved in law and public policy. Panelists include:
• Bob Levy, chairman of the board of directors at the Cato Institute.
• David Millstein, volunteer ACLU attorney since 1973.
• Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida, will be moderating the conversation.
The panel is co-sponsored by Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Greater Naples and Americans United for Separation of Church and State. To RSVP email [email protected] or call 239-948-0020.
