Acclaimed NYC-Based Dance Company in Key West for One Night Only

KEY WEST, Fla. — Renowned for its playful virtuosity, the critically acclaimed, New York-based Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company comes to The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street, for one night only on Tuesday, November 21 at 7:00pm. Sought after for their impactful and innovative dances, the Company, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018, brings its charismatic performers and accessible programming to Key West for the first time.

The exclusive evening begins with Encore, a signature work from the Company’s repertoire which premiered in 2007 at Manhattan’s Joyce SoHo and enjoyed a sold-out run in 2009 at the prestigious New York Musical Theater Festival. Back Stage says, “The Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company pulled out all the stops with its performance of Encore, a riotous new full-evening piece of razzle-dazzle entertainment.” Living at the intersection of concert dance and contemporary musical theater, Encore’s red hot choreography is set to an infectious score of classic jazz recordings. The New Yorker notes “the dancers can’t help but smile.” Neither can the audiences.

In the second part of the evening the Company transitions into Affront, another powerful dance from the repertory. In Affront, which premiered this past August in Brooklyn, the pendulum swings toward the abstract, away from the sunniness of Encore. Affront, a trio, explores the tipping point when intimacy crosses into violence, peeking into the darker side of relationships.

“When Daniel came to us as an artist in residence this past summer, we were awed by his energy, professionalism, and enthusiasm,” says Elena Devers, Deputy Director of The Studios. “He immediately began collaborating with local performers like Mara Neimanis, Leigh Pujado, and Kyla Piscopink, creating evocative site-specific pieces at the beach and on the street. We are thrilled he’s agreed to return to Key West, and so delighted he’ll bring his Company.”
