A political action committee has been formed to change how voters elect the Monroe County Board of Commissioners
Key West, FL – A newly formed political action committee, the Florida Keys Regional Election Protection (REP),advocates switching from county-wide election of Commissioners to one in which each district elects its own representative. REP is kicking off a drive to ask residents to sign petitions to place a referendum on the 2022 ballot to enable single-member districts. Currently, voters from the entire Monroe County elect all five district Commissioners. For example, voters in Key Largo also vote for the County commissioner who represents Key West.
Kathryn Norris, Chair and Christoper Massicotte, Treasurer officially filed the paperwork on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 to officiate the PAC. Norris noted, “Keys REP is filing as a political action committee on Election Day 2021, when citizens across America are voting for their government representatives. Our goal is to give Monroe County voters stronger local representation on their Board of County Commissioners.” Keys REP would like to gather 6,000 signatures from registered Monroe County constituents by the end of June 2022.
Board members of Keys REP believe that single district voting will maximize elected officials’ accountability to their constituents.
