A Key West man sentenced to state prison

KEY WEST, February 25, 2020 – A Key West man previously arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon has been sentenced to state prison after having his probation revoked following another arrest.

On February 19, Darin Reinsmith, 53, was given 21 months by Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mark Jones. Judge Jones had sentenced Reinsmith to 364 days in jail and 60 months of probation on August 2, 2018, after Reinsmith pleaded no contest to the original charge.

Reinsmith violated probation by getting arrested for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license with knowledge on August 6, 2019, in St. Johns County in North Florida. He could not pass a field sobriety test and his driver’s license has been suspended since 2005.

The original case is from January 8, 2018, when Key West police were called to a fast-food restaurant about a man, later identified as Reinsmith, who pulled a knife on another man and threatened to stab him.

The victim told police that he and a friend were playing around and the victim put his friend in a headlock. Reinsmith approached and said to let go, then said, “You want to get stabbed…?” Reinsmith then pulled out a knife. The victim tried to take away the knife but was unsuccessful.

Reinsmith told police he never went into the restaurant, but video from the restaurant shows Reinsmith entering, pulling the knife and the victim trying to take it away. Reinsmith then put the knife in his pocket and exited the store. Police found the knife in Reinsmith’s shorts pocket.
