The Key West High School (KWHS) Drama Club plans to end the school year with a bang. Its 73 members have begun preparations for their annual musical in May.
Drama Club President, Meghan Barter decided it would be best for all of the club to take a vote on the play this year. “I like to let it be the choice of the kids because I think it’s good to let them perform what they want to. Plus, I trust that the most popular vote will be in the best interest of the other students in the school and the public,” Barter states.
From now until the performance, the Drama Club will be working their hardest to be able to present a stunning musical to show the public. Their past shows have been popular with the community, including Legally Blonde and High School Musical. “We’ve sold out almost all our shows the past two years, which is great, and I hope we continue this year,” Barter explains.
All students at KWHS can participate, even if they are not in Drama Club. Barter elaborates, “I would love for more and more students to get involved in other aspects as well, such as set building, tech, crew, costumes, and more.” Drama Club is not just about the acting because the show cannot go on without the crew.
The Drama Club has grown over the past two years, gaining experience and expertise to improve their performances. “This is our third year, and I feel like every year we have another show, we get better. We have more veterans within the club, more people involved, and lots of support,” Barter explains.
The Drama Club has been working hard to raise money for their show, recently putting on fundraisers at local supermarkets and holding car washes. Money made from the fundraisers will be used to buy rights for the musical and will help get props and costumes for the show.
“[Our] musical is for all ages, so I really hope people can go. It is a going to be a really fun show this year,” Barter concludes. To support the Drama Club, purchase an advertisement for their playbill, which will be handed out at their musical, contact director Juliet Gray for more information at [email protected].
