A look at Gov. Scott’s headline-grabbing moves

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Although Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s actions are consistent with his political beliefs, he’s getting maximum attention for them in areas that play well with conservatives. A look at recent events:

— Scott, who has signed into law bills seeking to create hurdles to abortion, ordered the Agency for Health Care Administration to investigate Florida’s 16 Planned Parenthood clinics to make sure they were complying with all abortion laws after national attention about the group providing fetal tissue for research.

— Scott responded to a shooting at a Chattanooga, Tennessee, military recruiting center by ordering Florida National Guardsmen be armed and relocating recruiting centers to armories until security could be improved.

— Scott sued the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in an attempt to force the agency to allow state inspectors examine records at Florida VA hospitals. It was a reaction to reports in other states about secret waiting lists for care. The lawsuit was later dropped.

— Scott made repeated demands of the federal government to provide testing kits, training and protective suits after Ebola cases were confirmed in Texas. He eventually criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for its slow response and said the state would act on its own to prepare in case the disease turned up in Florida.

— Scott used his political committee to host leading Republican presidential candidates in a forum that earned him a national spotlight and praise from the party’s national leaders.
