Mosquito Control Open House to be held October 8th at Marathon Airport
Event Celebrates FKMCD’s 75th Anniversary
The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) is celebrating 75 years of protecting public health in Monroe County by showcasing equipment, aircraft, and multiple learning displays during a special ‘Open House’ scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Marathon.
The informal, family friendly, event will be held at FKMCD’s facility in Marathon, 503 107th Street.
All of the District’s five helicopters will be on display as well as other professional mosquito control equipment such as fog trucks, back pack sprayers and mosquito traps.
FKMCD pilots will stage an aerial spray demonstration over the airport at 5:30 p.m. Those same pilots and other members of the District’s aviation team will also be on hand to talk one-on-one about the ins and outs of aerial mosquito control.
In addition, FKMCD research staff will be on hand with show and tell exhibits detailing the mosquito lifecycle, ongoing research projects, and District surveillance equipment. Also, FKMCD Inspectors will be available to show and discuss the ‘cryptic’ breeding sites for potentially disease spreading mosquitos such as the Aedes aegypti. They will also provide insider tips that will help prevent mosquito development all year round.
There will be craft activities for the kids as well as drinks and refreshments, including the cutting of a special ‘75th Anniversary’ cake.
FKMCD Commission Chair Phil Goodman said:
“I can think of no better way to commemorate the District’s 75th Anniversary than by standing alongside the public we are so proud to protect. This is the perfect opportunity to see first-hand the staff and technology that make FKMCD a recognized leader in organized mosquito control.”
The FKMCD Open House hours again are 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8.
The Location is FKMCD’s facility at the Marathon Airport, 503 107th Street Gulf.
