Turtle Hatchlings Rescued by Off-Duty Detective

More than 80 baby turtles were rescued Thursday night when off-duty Detective Brian Leahy spotted the hatchlings at the 1900 block of South Roosevelt Blvd.
The Key West Police Department temporarily closed the road to ensure the turtles were not killed. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and Turtle rescue responded to the scene, and the babies were moved to the beach.
“We are proud of the heroic and amazing efforts of our off-duty detective who is always on duty to serve the community.” said Chief Sean Brandenburg, “And we are proud of the collaboration between multiple agencies that saved over 80 of these endangered turtle hatchlings.”
