Abel Berlanga, 4, beams in happiness at receiving the Grand Prize trophy at Saturday’s Key Lime Pie Drop at the Key West Lighthouse. Titled “The Best Homemade Pie Drop Entry Ever,” Abel, with some assistance from his mother Amanda, assembled his idea using a laundry basket, water balloons, and bubble blowing toy lawn mower. “We homeschool,” said his father Will, “and every time we do science all he can talk about is his love for the pie drop!” Abel reports: “Winning today was the best ever!” (Photo: Carol Tedesco/KeyLimeFestival.com)

Key Lime Pie Drop at the Key West Lighthouse

Thirty-one individuals and teams took part in Saturday’s Key Lime Pie Drop at the Key West Lighthouse, an annual Key Lime Festival event that calls for competitors to advance-create a device or container to protect a 5” diameter pie and keep it from exploding on impact when dropped from the approximately 88-foot observation deck of the historic tower. The creative and gravity-defying competition was one of numerous Key Lime Festival events held July 3 – 7, presented in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and We’ve Got the Keys.
