Additional charges filed in fishing gear theft case

A 20-year-old Homestead, Florida man arrested earlier this month in a wide-ranging Sheriff’s Office investigation into fishing rod thefts in Monroe County has been additionally charged with more thefts.

Ryan Alexander Oliu faces a litany of additional grand theft and burglary charges for his role in multiple boat burglaries since September 2023. He also faces new charges for molesting private bait traps on Duck Key.

A second man, Daniel Aleman, 18, of Miami, Florida, was also previously arrested in the case.

Both men were arrested following the search of a Honda sedan that was stopped in relation to this investigation at approximately 12 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 1 in which stolen fishing rods and reels were found.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional charges as well as more arrests may be pending.

Two men cited in illegal fish case

Two Florida men were given mandatory notice to appear in court citations on Wednesday for possessing multiple undersized fish.

Middle Keys Marine Deputies Willie Guerra and Luis Guiardinu were conducting resource checks at approximately 4:20 p.m. on the Channel Two Bridge.

Carlos Alberto Fidalgo Ruiz, 33, of Miami, Florida; and Mardiel Flores, 37, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, were both in possession of 10 undersized mangrove snapper, five undersized schoolmaster snapper, one undersized hogfish, and a parrotfish. Carlos also violated the legal aggregate bag limit of five mangrove snappers per harvester.
