Tropic Cinema Withdraws as Exhibitor for 2015 Key West Film Festival
Tropic Cinema, the nonprofit, independent film multiplex located in Old Town Key West, will not be an exhibitor for the 2015 Key West Film Festival according to the art house cinema’s Executive Director, Matthew Helmerich.
“After contract negotiations with the festival organizers proved unsuccessful, our board has decided not to offer the Tropic as a venue for this year’s festival,” said Helmerich.
Tropic Cinema had been an integral part of the Key West Film Festival’s access into Key West and the Tropic’s devoted filmgoing membership for the past three years.
“The Tropic is proud to have been a part of the festival and we wish them success with their future festivals,” Helmerich added.
Helmerich said that Tropic Cinema continues to focus on creating ongoing, unique “Film Festivals” of special programming throughout the year.
In addition to screening a wide variety of independent and wide-release films daily, Tropic Cinema’s special programming includes sneak previews of acclaimed films with the “New York Film Critics Series,” its “4 Nights 4 Justice” series in collaboration with the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, special visiting filmmaker events and the locally produced “72-Hour Film Challenge,” among others.
The Tropic serves as a cultural and community center for the Lower Keys hosting scores of events and fundraisers annually for local nonprofits, schools and civic organizations.
