National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week
Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission have proclaimed this week as National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.
This annual observation comes as many prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, while so many in the community struggle with job loss, loss of homes, and hunger.
The purpose of this proclamation is to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless including the shortage of affordable housing in the City of Key West, especially for very low-income residents; and to encourage support of homelessness assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.
The proclamation was accepted by many representatives of the 31 agencies that make up the coalition for their continuous hard work to help those in need.
For more than 30 years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to help to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless.
The proclamation also encourages support of homelessness assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.
