Man charged with trafficking fentanyl

A 32-year-old Fort Lauderdale, Florida motorist was arrested Wednesday on a litany of drug charges following a traffic stop on U.S. 1.

Michael Phillip Lowell was charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession of Xanax without a prescription, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.

The Sheriff’s Office stopped a southbound Nissan Maxima with a broken headlight and no tag lights traveling near Mile Marker 76 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Lowell was identified as the driver. There was an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

The following was found:

• 11 grams of fentanyl

• 3.1 grams of Xanax

• 5.3 grams of marijuana

• An electronic scale

• A glass pipe, baggies, and other assorted drug paraphernalia

Fleeing suspect arrested

A 53-year-old Sugarloaf Key, Florida man was arrested Wednesday for throwing rocks at residents and resisting arrest. There were no serious injuries reported.

Joseph Aaron McNeal was charged with assault and resisting arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to Driftwood Lane at approximately 8:30 p.m. following reports of a suspicious man, later identified as McNeal, running through the area and throwing rocks at residents. McNeal fled, jumped over a fence, ran through an adjacent property, jumped into a canal, and attempted to hide near a boat when the Sheriff’s Office arrived.

McNeal refused to exit the water, refused to stand on his feet thereafter, and did not allow the Sheriff’s Office to place him in handcuffs. He was subsequently pepper sprayed and taken into custody.
