Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

A 37-year-old Louisville, Kentucky man was arrested Thursday for cocaine possession following a traffic stop on U.S. 1.

John Chris Steier was also charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Steier was stopped in an Infiniti SUV southbound near Mile Marker 55 for having no functioning rear tail lights at approximately 8:05 p.m. A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the vehicle.

The following was found:

  • Approximately 2.2 grams of cocaine
  • Approximately 1.1 grams of marijuana and rolling papers
  • Two THC vape pens

A female passenger was not arrested.


Man cited for wildlife violation

A 72-year-old Miami, Florida man was given a mandatory notice to appear in court citation Thursday for possessing an undersized fish.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to Cort Lane in Tavernier at approximately 7:32 p.m. following reports of anglers illegally harvesting fish.

Carlos Roberto Betancourt was cited for possession of an undersized mangrove snapper.
